Drake And Lil Wayne's 'Miss Me' Video: Behind The Scenes

Clip, which premieres Thursday night on MTV, was shot the day Weezy first heard Drake's 'Over.'By Shaheem Reid

While on the set of Drake's "Miss Me" video, which premieres Thursday (August 19) at 8 p.m. on MTV, Lil Wayne performed — but he also kept his executive hat on, giving Drizzy the OK to put out "Over" as the first single from Thank Me Later.
During a break from shooting the Anthony Mandler-directed video, Wayne and Drake started spitting rhymes to one another in a cipher.

" 'Bout to go Thriller Mike Jackson on these n---as/ All I need's a f---ing red jacket with some zippers," Drake rapped, lines that were foreign to Weezy's ears. "Super good smiddoke, a package of the Swishers/ I did it overnight, it couldn't happen any quicker/ Y'all know them? Well, f--- it, me either/ But point the biggest skeptic out, I'll make him a believer/ It wouldn't be the first time I done it, throwin' hundreds/ When I should be throwin' ones, bitch, I run it."
Wayne had a huge smile on his face after the verse.
"[When they were filming], it was like you could tell they knew they had one," Weezy's videographer DJ Scoob Doo, who was shooting scenes for the next installment of his and Wayne's "Nino Brown" DVD series, said to RapFix.
"Wayne was shooting a lot of videos at the time — a lot of videos," he added. "This one was more of the theme of him speaking from the heart even though all of them were speaking from the heart, this was more of the thing that he kind of like jumped into his mode for real because it made so much sense. [Wayne] wanted people to know how he felt. Like when people see the video, they're going to really understand how he feels when he's in [jail]. People are going to feel like he shot it yesterday because he really captured that moment.
"Drake made the song and brought it to Wayne," he continued. "It's not like Wayne came up with the concept — Drake came up with the concept. So it was also Drake knowing that Wayne would not be here when they shooting this video. It's like, it's perfect timing. So this is not by mistake, this is masterminds at work."
Right after the two stopped filming, Drake played "Over" for Wayne for the first time.
"Wayne liked it," Scoob said. "And I think that's the reason why they went with that single because it's, like, not a traditional Drake song. At the time where everybody could kind of see him singing and rapping, 'Over' was kind of like a more aggressive rapping type of thing for Drake." The song debuted on Toronto radio about a week later.

Drake And Nicki Minaj: A Timeline To Twitter Matrimony

A look at the 'super-close' Young Money stars' relationship.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Drake and Nicki Minaj

Photo: MTV News

Drake and Nicki Minaj are two of the biggest MCs reppin' Young Money and on Friday, the hitmaking rappers made major headlines when they tweeted that they had tied the knot. Even if unions announced on social-networking sites aren't recognized by law, the duo's strong bond is undeniable.
Here's a timeline of Drake and Nicki Minaj's moments in the spotlight on their road to Twitter matrimony:
»Minaj told Mixtape Daily in August 2009 that she and Drizzy are "super-close." "Before all of this started, I would tell him, 'You're a star.' And he'd be like, 'You're a star.' And we'd kinda been each other's biggest fans. To see his dreams come into fruition, it makes me very happy," she said.
»In fall 2009, Minaj battled criticism for reportedly penning her freestyles beforehand; an issue that Drake also dealt with earlier in the year.
»In March 2010, Drizzy and Minaj joined Young Money boss Lil Wayne onstage at New York City's famed Madison Square Garden. "This means the world to me -- to be there with Jay-Z, Lil Wayne, Young Jeezy and Drake," Minaj said. "It was the stuff that dreams are made of for a girl."
»Drake and Minaj appeared together on the May issue of XXL magazine with the caption, "Domination: The Rebirth of Rap Royalty."
»Drake stuck up for Minaj in June amid her drama with fellow femcee Lil' Kim and said he "didn't respect" the Queen Bee's swipes.
»Drake said that he and the Young Money Barbie have a "playful relationship" when asked about the infamous "Miss Me" lyric in which he spits about wife-ing up Minaj. "That line on the album is just me playing with her. I'll be playing with her for years until she's ready to go, and then I'm ready," he said.
»Drake dropped Thank Me Later on June 15. Nicki Minaj appears on the track "Up All Night."
» On August 27, the MCs told their Twitter followers that they are married. "Please refer to @nickiminaj as Mrs. Aubrey Drake Graham and dont stare at her too long. She's finally mine. :)," Drizzy tweets.
What do you think about Nicki Minaj and Drake's relationship? Do you think they are actually married? If not, do you think they ever will marry? Sound off in the comments below!

Lady Gaga Thanks Fans For Twitter Crown

The singer shouts out her fans for making her the most-followed tweeter.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Lady Gaga's millions of fans have another title to call their Mother Monster: Queen of Twitter.
After steadily gaining on Britney Spears, who until recently was the most-followed user on the social-networking site, Gaga surpassed her fellow pop supernova over the weekend by landing over 5.7 million followers. At press time, Gaga's Twitter army clocked in at 5,726,168 deep, besting Brit, who had 5,696,275 followers. Just days ago, the chart-toppers were neck-and-neck, with Spears boasting 5,646,028 Twitter peeps to Gaga's 5,635,460.
When Gaga learned she had dethroned Spears, she took to the Internet to thank the people who made it all possible: her fans. In a video posted online, Gaga doles out heaps of "monster" love to her followers for solidifying her digital dominance.
Sporting a lace headpiece adorned with a sequined Twitter logo and an ornamental Gaga-fied version of the site's familiar bird symbol, the singer addressed her nearly 6 million followers.
"Hello world, this is Lady Gaga, queen of Twitter," said the singer, with a flourish of an illuminated scepter and a sprinkle of glitter; a move that was part-Elizabethan royalty and part-Glinda the Good Witch. "I wanted to thank all my beautiful little monsters for following me. Thank you for beginning my reign as Twitter queen."
The singer then wished her Twitter-dom only the most enjoyable of experiences when logging onto the micro-blogging site.
"May you always have soft cuticles while tweeting," Gaga said wistfully. "May you never have carpal tunnel."
The "Alejandro" singer, who filmed the clip backstage at her Monster Ball Tour stop in Tacoma, Washington, promised to keep the Twitter nonsense to a minimum. "I vow never to partake in celebrity online shenanigans," Gaga said. "And I vow to always tweet and tweet again."
Before signing off, Gaga left her legions of viral fans with a few words of encouragement.
"Just remember that I love you," Gaga said. "And love you yourself. Because little monsters, you were born that way, baby. I love you Twitter. See you at the Monster Ball."

Soulja Boy Tell'em Calls Justin Bieber's YouTube Game 'Crazy'

'For him to be younger than me and have that amount of people tune in to him,' he says on 'RapFix Live.'By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Sway Calloway

Does Soulja Boy Tell'em have to watch his back online?
Justin Bieber has taken SB's digital playbook (YouTube, Twitter, etc.) and used it to catapult him to success. But when the two Twitter rivals — SB has more than 2 million followers to Bieber's gang of more than 4 million — connected to shoot a Nickelodeon movie earlier this year, they discovered they were actually fans of each other's work.

"He told me how he liked my songs and stuff like that," Soulja Boy revealed during "RapFix Live" on Thursday (August 19). "And I was really going off the stuff I saw on YouTube," he told host Sway of the Biebs. "His YouTube views was up there, and for me coming off of YouTube, that's crazy ... for him to be younger than me and have that amount of people tune in to him."
But while SB didn't make any plans, at least on-air, to collaborate with Bieber, he did accept an offer to record together from last week's "RapFix Live" guest, Lloyd Banks.
Meanwhile, the 20-year-old rapper is putting the finishing touches on his forthcoming album, The DeAndre Way, which is set for a fall release. His tentative next single is the Boi-1da-helmed "Speakers Going Hammer."
"Basically, it's all about the sound of the music," SB told MTV News last month about the track. "I got bars on this one. First verse, second verse, all bars — another anthem, as far as the hook. The hook is catchy. The video is gonna match the song perfect. And it's another hit.

Usher Opens Up About Marriage To Tameka Foster

'It just was never going to work out 100 percent,' the singer says. By Mawuse Ziegbe

Photo: Getty Images/ Frank Micelotta

Usher's personal life — or public speculation about what has happened behind closed doors — has often figured prominently in the singer's work. Fans ate up the 2004 Confessions LP, which dropped amid rumors that Usher had stepped out on ex-girlfriend Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas. Similarly, the singer had endured whispers about his reportedly rocky marriage to stylist Tameka Foster before his latest album, Raymond v. Raymond, debuted at #1 this year.
On the heels of the release of Versus, an extension of Raymond, the R&B crooner opened up about why he wasn't able to make it work with Foster.
"We're two different people and we have two different goals," Usher told People. "It just was never going to work out 100 percent."
Just like he did with his monster album Confessions, the ATL singer turned the heartbreak into hits.
"My music is about where I am at the time," Usher explained. "In Raymond v. Raymond, I was going through a lot of things, and it came out in my music. My marriage fell apart and
I was suddenly a single father."
Continuing his tradition of mining his personal life for inspiration, Usher said that Versus is "about being a dating father."
Earlier this year, the buzz surrounding his relationship with Foster ramped up when Usher's track "Papers," a song about ending a marriage by signing off on divorce documents, hit airwaves. However, Usher told MTV News in March that while the track wasn't inspired by a real-life situation, it unfortunately became a self-fulfilling prophecy.
"When the song was recorded, I wasn't divorced," Usher said. "It was some reality in the contrast of trying to make it all work, having to balance a career and having a normal life. Coming in at six in the morning and arguing was a reality when you have those type of relationships. I felt that in a way, the story did touch on certain things at the time. I didn't know how realistic it would become. I didn't know I would become divorced. I did know it spoke on the contrast between trying to balance this world of being married and having this responsibility that's like a marriage at the same time. The song spoke to that place. Unfortunately, it did become a reality."

'The Expendables' Stars Want Justin Bieber For Sequel

Dolph Lundgren also suggests first-film holdout Jean-Claude Van Damme for the next film — as their victim.By Eric Ditzian

Photo: Devan Pratt/MTV News

Where does "Expendables" star Sylvester Stallone turn now, after his cinematic smorgasbord of '80s action giants fire-bombed the competition and won the weekend box-office title? Can you hear the collective cry of $35 million worth of ticket-buyers? They're calling for a sequel!

Sly has plans to give the people what they want — he already has a second flick plotted out in his head — but for now, he's waiting on even greater box-office bucks and the chance to see which co-stars will return and which fresh faces he can entice to join the crew of gun-totting mercenaries. Stallone's fellow Expendables have some strong ideas about who they want to see in a sequel.
"Justin Bieber!" Terry Crews suggested to MTV News as the actors took over the New York Stock Exchange to ring the opening bell. "I want Justin Bieber! I want Justin Bieber's ass!"
Ya hear that, Bieber? Perhaps before you hop in front of the 3-D cameras for your upcoming biopic, you can hang with some old dogs like Stallone, Dolph Lundgren and Crews.
Lundgren, meanwhile, has his eye on a different guy to join the second installment — one who actually turned down a part in the first flick.
"I'd like to kill [Jean-Claude] Van Damme, please!" Lundgren said.
"He's hunting Van Damme down!" Stallone laughed.
Added Jason Statham: "I'll be the cut man for that!"
Two guys Stallone wants to reprise their roles are Arnold Schwarzenegger and Bruce Willis. In fact, Sly revealed he's already been in contact with them about returning for a sequel. "The main thing is to find out who's available, who wants to be in it," he said. "I'm talking to Arnold and Bruce [about] different schedules and other actors. Then you have to bring in some new guys, some young blood.
"I haven't had an opening like this," Stallone added. "To me, it's miraculous. And what sunk in finally is, in this day and age, it's all about concept, it's not about the actor. No one actor can open a movie anymore, so you need the help of your friends. This was a group effort. I had the biggest opening because they helped. That's the name of the game."
Who do you want to see join the Expendables crew for a sequel? Share your thoughts in the comments!

Britney Spears Tweets A Picture From 'Glee' Set

'Can't wait for you guys to see the episode!' Spears writes on Twitter.By Mawuse Ziegbe

For fans who may have doubted whether the Britney Spears "Glee" episode is happening, the pop sensation has just provided photographic proof.
The star gave fans a glimpse of her inner-"Gleek" on Wednesday (August 18) by posting a TwitPic of herself next to her assistant Brett Miller, a Spears doppelgänger, both sporting similar specs and wavy blond locks.
After devoting episodes to the dance-floor-filling repertoires of Madonna and Lady Gaga, "Glee" is hard at work bringing Spears' string of hits to William McKinley High. So far, Spears, who makes a cameo in the upcoming episode, is enjoying the process.
"About to do my first shot of the day for Glee tweeties! Here we goooo!" Spears tweeted. The "Circus" singer later added, "What's up GLEEKS? Having so much fun on set!! Can't wait for you guys to see the episode!"
The "Glee" cast is also pumped to turn out Spears' smash-hit catalog. "I get to do Britney Spears!" Heather Morris exclaimed to MTV News earlier this month. "I like 'Toxic' the best or the 'Slave' video. It was always her best performance. She's rocking! I don't care what I do."
Jenna Ushkowitz confirmed that Lea Michele would take on Spears' star-making debut hit, " ... Baby One More Time." Aside from Spears' TwitPic — in which she's presumably in costume — and "Glee" creator Ryan Murphy's recent comments that Spears will "kind of" play herself, details about the episode have remained under wraps.
"Some old Britney, some new Britney, some Brittany of our Brittany from the glee club. So it should be funny," Ushkowitz hinted about the song selection. "We're really excited. I love Britney Spears."

Kid Rock's Born Free Due November 16

New album will feature collaborations with T.I., Sheryl Crow and Zac Brown.By Gil Kaufman

Kid Rock

Photo: JulNeil Lupin/ Redferns

There's no way you're going to be able to confuse Kid Rock's upcoming album Born Free with twitch-pop bomb-thrower M.I.A.'s song of the same name.
First of all, Rock's eighth studio album, due November 16, was produced by legendary knobmeister Rick Rubin. Second, even though Rock, like M.I.A., will release a song called "Born Free" as his first single, the Detroit bad boy's tune focuses not on world affairs, but on the economic decline of his hometown, Detroit.
A press release announcing the album calls Born Free "transformational," going on to note that while Rock retains his "edge, wit, and swagger" on the record, he has left his rap-metal roots behind. "There isn't even a parental warning sticker," the release says.
Rock described how D-town inspired the Americana feel of some tracks.
"The catalyst for this record was Detroit, and my thoughts on the world through the lens of Detroit," he said. "Watching everything go downhill over the past few years, the economy, the loss of jobs everywhere, I wanted to make a record that reflected the times but that still had soul."
Most of the album was recorded during a two-week session in Los Angeles with a band that included Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers keyboardist Benmont Tench, Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, Los Lobos guitarist/singer David Hidalgo and Chavez guitarist Matt Sweeney. The release also noted that Rock logged time in studios in Detroit, Nashville and Atlanta to lay down collaborations with fellow hometown rock icon Bob Seger, former flame Sheryl Crow, Zac Brown and Trace Adkins. T.I. and Martina McBride will appear on a song called "Care."
The disc is the follow-up to 2007's slow-burn success Rock N Roll Jesus, which produced the Lynyrd Skynyrd-inspired 2008 hit "All Summer Long."
Rock provided a preview of the album earlier this month when he performed six of its songs during a series of hometown shows. In addition to the Detroit-boosting anthem "Times Like These," he pulled the cover back on the Springsteen-like title track, the midtempo "Slow My Roll," the somber "Rock On," the 1970s-style rocker "Feels Good to Me" and the Rolling Stones-influenced "God Bless Saturday."

David Guetta Featured On Akon's Upcoming Album

'He's an incredible producer,' 'Kon says of Guetta, set to perform at WMC 2010 in Miami.By Akshay Bhansali, with reporting by Damian Vaca

Akon

Photo: MTV News

For the past two years, David Guetta has been on a house music DJ/producer's dream run. He has had commercial success doing what few of his colleagues in the electronic world have been able to do: He's making club music that has American urban artists biting at his heels, has soared into the U.S. charts with a series of monster singles and, after being nominated in three categories, he walked away with the Grammy for Best Remixed Recording for his single "When Love Takes Over," featuring Kelly Rowland.

One of his most lasting accomplishments was last year's Black Eyed Peas single "I Gotta Feeling," a track he produced that spent 14 weeks at the #1 position on the Billboard Hot 100, selling over 5 million downloads through February of this year.
In addition to Rowland, his album One Love featured notable singles with Estelle ("One Love") and Kid Cudi (the internationally charting "Memories"). And then there is his most successful single as a solo artist, "Sexy Chick" featuring Akon, which peaked in December of last year at #5 and now, months later, is still perched at #20 on the Hot 100 list.
MTV News had a chance to catch up with Akon recently on the set of Quincy Jones' video for his forthcoming album single, "Strawberry Letter 23," where he broke down a bit of Guetta's genius for us.
"He's an incredible DJ, first of all," 'Kon said. "Second, he's an incredible producer. He's the kind of guy that goes outside the box, so we spoke the same language on the production side of things. We just wanted to do something that no one had thought to put together and before you know it, man, we just got together and came up with the most incredible record."
Lately rumors have been swirling that Guetta has produced a song for Rihanna, and that he also recorded with one of Akon's artists, Lady Gaga, but that turned out to have been just a meeting of mutual appreciation. Still, 'Kon did reveal to expect another treat courtesy of the "Sexy Chick" pair on his forthcoming album, Stadium.
"I got some incredible collaborations," Akon said. "I just can't let you know yet. But I can give you a hint: Guetta will be a part of that record as well. It's gonna be ... just wait. I don't want to overhype it. I just want to put it out and let you see."
If you can't wait that long, Guetta will be headlining the Ultra Music Fest at the Winter Music Conference in Miami. Also featured at the fest will be Will.I.Am, Deadmau5, Swedish House Mafia, Major Lazer, Calvin Harris, LMFAO, Tiesto, A-Trak and many more.
Stick with MTV News for more coverage of the Winter Music Conference, which kicks off Tuesday in Miami.

Swizz Beatz Encourages 50 Cent To Make 'Triumphant' Music

'He's working on some amazing material,' Swizzy says on MTV's 'RapFix Live.'By Mawuse Ziegbe

Super-producer Swizz Beatz has been keeping super busy in the studio these days.

Swizzy has jumped on Kanye West's all-star "Power" remix and has been updating his Twitter followers about his recent late-night sessions with everyone from N.E.R.D. to Mary J. Blige. During his Thursday (August 26) interview on "RapFix Live," the rapper/producer revealed that he's also been in the lab with 50 Cent.
"I met up with him earlier in the day," Swizz explained about slotting studio time with Fif, Mary and Busta Rhymes on Wednesday. "He's working on some amazing material that we're possibly collaborating on." For the most part, Swizz kept the details of his collabo with 50 on the low: "I don't want to talk too soon or too early, but it's crazy."
50 has been going back and forth about the direction of his next album after reportedly scrapping plans to work in some dance rhythms on his Black Magic LP. Swizzy, who hit the studio with 50 to craft material for the Queens MC's 2007 album Curtis, said the only advice he has for Fif is to maintain a winner's attitude.
"Triumphant. That's it. Everything just would have to be triumphant," Swizzy advised. But the producer said he's encouraging all the stars he works with, including the Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, to unleash a crazy amount of swagger in the booth.
"That's my approach on every artist I'm working with right now. Even with Mary, you're gonna be able to hear this week, probably Friday, her sound that's triumphant," Swizz said. "For me to have that blueprint and to want to be able to share it with everybody that's of talent, it's like, 'Wow, this is what I get to do for work?' It's fun."
What do you think an upcoming Swizz Beatz and 50 Cent collabo would sound like? Sound off in the comments below!

"In memoriam" segments at awards shows tend to be serious montages featuring some of the fallen stars of the year prior. But at this year's Emmy Awards, the night's MC, Jimmy Fallon, decided to have a little fun with the yearly tradition by saying farewell to several of the beloved television shows that went off the air this past year.

Dressed as Elton John, Fallon sat down at a pink grand piano and sang his own version of "Candle in the Wind" in honor of the now-defunct "24." During the song, he changed the lyrics to: "Goodbye '24'/ Though I never watched you on TV/ I missed one episode/ Had to buy the DVDs/ ... [Jack Bauer] never going to the men's room, how did he hold it in?/ I would like to thank you for the torturing/ And the first black president."
Transitioning into a member of Boyz II Men, Fallon said goodbye to onetime television mainstay "Law & Order" with his take on "It's So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday." "How do I say goodbye, 'Law & Order'?/ The good crimes, that changing cast/ I thought we'd get to season 21, but now that sound has gone away/ But at least there's still that one with Mariska Hargitay," he crooned to the laughing crowd.
Fallon then became Green Day's Billie Joe Armstrong and, strumming his guitar, changed up the band's hit "Good Riddance (Time of Your Life)" as a ballad to fan favorite "Lost." "The island it was mythical, but in the end they died/ I didn't understand it, but I tried," he concluded the song.
What did you think of Fallon's show-farewell musical montage? Let us know in the comments!

Britney Spears May Cover 'Me Against The Music' On 'Glee'

Photo: Facebook

It appears viewers may get a taste of Madonna in Britney Spears' "Glee" episode.
Spears, who has been sending out updates from the set of the Fox megahit, tweeted a picture of herself in a scene reminiscent of her Madonna collaboration, "Me Against the Music." In the picture, Spears faces "Glee" castmember Heather Morris, who is decked out in a suit and blue shirt similar to the gender-bending look the superstar singer sports in the 2003 video. Instead of reprising her original look, though, Spears appears to be taking on Madonna's role, donning an all-white outfit reminiscent of Madge's look in the clip.
The singer accompanied the picture with a Twitter missive referencing the lyrics from the uptempo track: "All my GLEEKERS in the crowd, Grab a partner take it down."
In addition to possibly revamping "Me Against the Music," the upcoming Britney tribute episode will feature the smash hit that started it all. Jenna Ushkowitz confirmed to MTV News earlier this month that Lea Michele will perform a version of " ... Baby One More Time." Ushkowitz also revealed that fans may see a match-up between the "Circus" superstar and the show's in-house Brittany.
"Some old Britney, some new Britney, some Brittany of our Brittany from the glee club. So it should be funny," Ushkowitz said. "We're really excited. I love Britney Spears."
Madonna didn't participate in the making of her "Glee" tribute episode but Spears appears to be having fun on the set.
"We love GLEE! Its GLEEKERIFIC!!!" Spears tweeted on Thursday (August 19). The singer also tweeted about her first day of filming on Wednesday and sent out another picture. "What's up GLEEKS? Having so much fun on set!!" Spears typed. "Can't wait for you guys to see the episode!"

Katy Perry Brings Candyfornia To 'Today'

Chart-topping singer hits New York's Rockefeller Center with Gummi Bears and lollipops.By Jocelyn Vena

Photo: Jemal Countess/ Getty Images

A bedazzled Katy Perry made a grand entrance on "Today" Friday (August 27) morning, descending to the stage in a cotton candy cloud that brought to mind the cover for her new album Teenage Dream and the candy-coated video for her chart-topping song "California Gurls."

Perry opened her set for the show's summer concert series with that ode to the Golden State, and the Candyfornia theme didn't end there. The entire stage was a tribute to sugary sweetness, featuring giant Gummi Bears and lollipops. "Well, I wanted to bring something sweet and it's so early in the morning and lots of people are cranky ... a spoonful makes everyone feel better," Perry said of her candy-coated stage.
That desire to bring a little sweetness to her fans' lives also explains why she added a cotton-candy scent to Teenage Dream's CD booklet. "I had this idea to have the actual booklet of the CD scented, especially since the picture is me on a cotton candy cloud," she said. Later, she donned a tutu and busted out Teenage Dream's title track, which is her latest single.
In between songs, the singer signed autographs for her wigged-out fans, including people who camped out in the middle of Manhattan to see their favorite pop star in the flesh. Perry sent them bedding as a thank-you present. She was also asked about her very own teenage dream — her fiancé, Russell Brand. But Perry had other men on her mind: "He is very romantic, except for Matt Lauer ... where is Matt Lauer?" she joked. "He knew I would be here today, and he left me!"
Perry wrapped up her "Today" appearance with a performance of her breakthrough hit "I Kissed A Girl," telling the crowd that the track "was one of the first songs I ever played [on the 'Today' stage]." Her band slowed the beginning of the track down and turned the song into an eerie ballad before speeding it up and adding a harder rock edge.

Paris Hilton's Drugs And Driving Woes: A Timeline

A history of the heiress' drug-related driving incidents.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Paris Hilton

Photo: Getty Images

Paris Hilton is known for her jet-set lifestyle but things tend to go south when the heiress decides to travel by car. On Friday, Hilton was arrested in Las Vegas for possession of cocaine after police pulled over the SUV she was riding in. The socialite's beau was apparently behind the wheel but Hilton was taken into custody after the illegal substance fell out of her purse.
The Vegas bust is not the first time Hilton has run into trouble with drugs while driving. Here's a timeline of her substance-related issues behind the wheel:
»Hilton was arrested on September 7, 2006 in Los Angeles for suspicion of drunk driving. The socialite's blood alcohol level was .08 percent, the minimum for a DUI charge in California.
»On May 4, 2007 the heiress was sentenced to 45 days behind bars for violating her probation. Hilton told the judge, "I'm very sorry and from now on I'm going to pay complete attention to everything. I'm sorry and I did not do it on purpose at all."
»On May 16, Hilton's jail time was trimmed from 45 days to 23 for good behavior, among other reasons.
»Hilton reported to jail on June 3, hours after attending the 2007 MTV Movie Awards. The socialite told MTV News, "I'm obviously a little scared right now."
»Hilton was ordered back to jail on June 8 after being released early to finish out her sentence under house arrest. The star reportedly screamed "It's not right" before being escorted from the courthouse in tears.
»Hilton was released from jail on June 26. The starlet was greeted by throngs of fans and paparazzi. "This is by far the hardest thing I have ever done. I have had a lot of time to reflect, and have already learned a bitter, but important lesson from this experience," she said in a statement.
»In July 2010, the heiress was detained in South Africa for possession of marijuana. The case was later dropped after authorities learned that another person in her group, and not Hilton, was smoking.
» Hilton was arrested in Las Vegas on August 27 for possession of cocaine.

Cee-Lo Reflects On Complex Career: 'I'm A Book, Not A Magazine'

'It is a continuation of the same revolution I have always talked about,' he tells MTV News of his many genres.By Shaheem Reid

Cee-Lo

Photo: Gustavo Caballero/ Getty Images

The magical voice of Cee-Lo translates whether he's singing songs that make immediate impact on pop radio like his latest single, "F--- You," or records that capture the hearts of the hip-hop community like his feature on Rick Ross' "Tears of Joy." For the Atlanta legend, he said singing is a perfect way to release his pain and that he will continue to show his versatility.

"It's simple, man. Me and Ross got history. We holla," Lo said about the latter record. "On the few occasions that we've met, it's always love and admiration. To do the record, of course it would have to been the right record. Who would have known 'Tears of Joy' would have been so immediate and apparently urgent of a song? It reverberated immediately. I'm never too quick to say, 'This is a hit record.' I don't even know how to talk like that. Each artistic endeavor of mine has always been an act of faith. I don't really know. I'm only doing what my heart and gut tells me to do. But I already know what comes out my mouth is different. Then again, there's something so signature about the 'Tears of Joy' joint. It reminds you — especially my fellow Southerners — it reminds you of a Goodie Mob record."
When Lo ran into Ross earlier this year in L.A., the Miami kingpin told him about the song he wanted to collaborate on. Ross sent the song off, and in two weeks, it was completed.
"He had verses on it already," Cee-Lo said. "But [the words] 'Tears of Joy' is all I needed. Ross did Ross, which is great. [The song] represents the contrast/contradiction which is life."
Cee-Lo said "Tears of Joy" almost represents a "homecoming" for him in the eyes of some fans to his soulful roots, first introduced with Outkast and his group Goodie Mob. Cee-Lo also argued that he's actually never left those musical beginnings; he's just simply ventured out and experimented on such projects as Gnarls Barkley's two LPs to show his peers and the fans how far hip-hop could go and to express his different sides.
"It is a continuation of the same revolution I have always talked about," he insisted. "It's the fact that people don't know me completely. I'm just now telling you more about myself. I'm a book, not a magazine."
Lo's next album, Lady Killer, comes out later this year, and he's also working on the next album from the Mob.
"The solo album is something completely different," he revealed. "I got that mixtape out there, Stray Bullets, which is a prequel to the album Lady Killer. That's got nothing to do with what I do with Goodie, besides quality. But Goodie, man, that's what 'Tears of Joy' represents. I hope people can see the bigger picture. None of that is lost in me. I ain't got so rich and famous that I separated from the soul. That's me, that's what I'm about. It's on the tip of my tongue at all times. It's people wanting that and needing that, that's all the incentive I need. That's what makes my life worth living, especially when I remember there was time I ain't have nothing constructive to say. So any time I can do it, I feel like I'm further ensuring good favor in my rights of passage, being pleasing in the sight of my maker. It truly means that much to me. My pain runs deep. All of that is behind what I got to sing."
For anyone wondering when Cee-Lo will make a full-throttle return to rapping, he said it will be on the Goodie Mob reunion LP, which doesn't have a release date yet.
"When people be asking why I don't rap no more, it's not that. ... It's gotta come," he explained. "I'mma isolate that to the Goodie Mob. That's all I care to rap about. Rappin' is like a contact sport. It's an attitude. So the only thing I get angry about is the calls [about me not rapping]. That makes me wanna fight. As far as somebody stepping on my shoes, because we standing too close to each other, I don't have that problem. Nobody does what I do. I don't have no conflict. So I can do what eases my mind. I do believe that music is not meant to agitate; it's meant to soothe the savage beast. I'm one of them beasts. It soothes me. I'm impressed, because I can separate myself from it and give credit to a higher power. It ain't really me. To be able to sing is a blessing to me. But really, you hurt so bad, sometimes I can't even rap about it. I gotta sing. That's why it always hurts a little bit no matter what I'm singing. There's pain in it. As far as Goodie goes, I got that. That's all I'm trying to tell y'all."
Lady Killer has a tentative release date in December.

Eminem's 'Lie' Video Shoot Was Like An Acting Workshop, Director Says

Joseph Kahn says Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan didn't have an easy job on 'Love the Way You Lie' set.By James Montgomery, with reporting by Matt Elias

Joseph Kahn

Photo: MTV News

Given that he's one of the biggest names in music videos and his latest project featured both Eminem and Rihanna, Joseph Kahn should have had no problem casting the two leads for the "Love the Way You Lie" video. And yet, he considers himself "incredibly lucky" to have landed both Dominic Monaghan and Megan Fox for the clip.
"Megan is one of those choices, like, whenever you write a music video, you go, 'I want a girl like Megan Fox,' " Kahn told MTV News. "I guarantee, like, 95 percent of music videos, they write, 'I would like a girl like Megan Fox.'"

Kahn said Fox is so popular, he didn't initially consider her participation a possibility. "We were actually looking around for some other actresses, and then, midway through, I just thought, 'Why don't I just try this?' " he said. "I mean, I have the biggest artist in the world, with the hottest song on the planet, with the hottest female artist ... and it's a meaty role. It's not like you're just slipping in there and looking pretty."
Fortunately for Kahn, Fox is an Eminem fan, and she loved the song and the role. "So, she said 'yes,' " he said. "I was blown away."
On the other hand, the director said he considered courting Monaghan right away. "I wanted him because he's an actor who can bury himself [in his roles]," Kahn said. "You can do anything with him, and essentially, he's a villain through all of [the video], and I think he did a great job."
So, with two big-name actors on set, and only two days to shoot the entire video, Kahn had his work cut out for him. Monaghan and Fox were going to need to channel conflicting emotions — anger one second, passion the next — and do it quickly. As the director, it was up to Kahn to help them harness all of that — often at a moment's notice. Luckily for him, he had two of the best to work with.
"I just told them: This is not like a normal film. We have two days on set, and we have to think of it as an acting workshop, because you're going to have to ramp up into emotions in two seconds, you're not going to know what the story is, and you're going to have to trust one another," he explained. "I'm asking them to go from zero to 100 in two seconds, so they were using all their techniques as actors. Dom would be calling her names, she'd be calling him names ... to see them turn it on like that, it was really a fascinating acting study."

'Love the Way You Lie' Joins List Of Memorable Joseph Kahn Videos

Kahn has directed videos for Britney Spears, Eminem, and Lady Gaga.By James Dinh

After much anticipation, the Joseph Kahn-directed video for Eminem and Rihanna's chart-topping "Love the Way You Lie" debuted Thursday (August 4) on MTV. In the song, Em and Rihanna tell the intense story of a woman who stays with her male counterpart despite his violent habits. The video shows Megan Fox and Dominic Monaghan engaging in a relationship that's similarly emotionally destructive.

Kahn, who has worked with everyone from Janet Jackson to Rob Zombie, has a particular directing style that emphasizes CGI special effects and futuristic styling. Here are a few other highlights from his career.
Britney Spears, "Toxic"
In the 2004 clip for Spears' flashy "Toxic," the pop princess played an assassin on a quest to poison her cheating boyfriend. The clip employed eye-popping costumes for Spears — including a stewardess outfit and a glittery bodysuit — and quickly rose to the top of the pop princess' videography. "The plot is pretty nonsensical. It's just fun. [It's like] James Bond flicks and sex," Kahn told MTV News. Years later, the director would collaborate with Spears on the clip for "Womanizer" — in which he slyly referenced their earlier collaboration.
U2, "Elevation"
U2 went on a ride like no other when they joined forces with "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" for the 2001 video promoting "Elevation." A call from an "evil Bono" set the mood for the action-filled video, which features the band on a rescue mission with Angelina Jolie thanks to Kahn inserting members into scenes from the film. With the help of Ms.
Croft, U2 dodges the dangers of the bad Bono, although eventually good and evil come face to face in a battle of stereo and vocal power. But the good guys win out, and the band walks into a calm street that has cars and elephants floating overhead.
Eminem, "Without Me"
For most of Eminem's career, the rapper has played the funny guy in his music videos. His clip for the 2002 hit single "Without Me" went further than mere gags, asserting his ability to poke fun at the controversies surrounding his music. Throughout the video, Em parodies a comic-book hero on a mission to save a young boy from listening to a copy of The Eminem Show, which is labeled with a dreaded 'Parental Advisory' sticker. While on his quest, Em manages to sleep with porn stars, practice yoga and appear on "The Real World."
Enrique Iglesias, "Hero"
Understandably, Enrique Iglesias' music videos have showcased his good looks and suave persona. His 2001 clip featured Jennifer Love Hewitt as the singer's love interest and other half of a modern-day Bonnie and Clyde. The two are on the lam from Mickey Rourke, who heads a rival group of bandits. After some steamy scenes with Hewitt, the pop star is found by Rourke's gang and apparenly killed by them.
Lady Gaga, "LoveGame"
If there's one thing Lady Gaga reps for, it's the busy streets of New York City. Before the days of her music videos doubling as mini-movies, Kahn helped the singer take a journey through the Big Apple's underground in a video that recalls Michael Jackson's also-subway-set "Bad." Accompanied by her crew of dancers, the singer drops it low in a subway station and dances the night away. "I worked with [video director] Joseph Kahn, and he did an amazing job. He didn't just capture the fashion; he captured the artist," Gaga told MTV News.

This is a big week for Miley Cyrus. After dropping her new album, Can't Be Tamed, and performing a live-streamed show to celebrate it on Monday, she's giving fans a glimpse of what it's like to be her with Tuesday's release of some of her songs to the "Rock Band" store.
Actually, Cyrus has long been a fan of the game, which she said offers her the chance to practice while on the road.

"I sat in front of the TV 90 percent of the tour, just playing 'Rock Band'," Cyrus confessed to MTV News. "It's pretty cool that now I can warm up playing my own songs on 'Rock Band' and then go do it in real life. So it's pretty rad. It's a better warm-up."
This will mark Cyrus' "Rock Band" debut, with five songs made available for download in the "Rock Band" music store. The "Miley Cyrus Pack 01" will feature five of Miley's fan favorites, including "Can't Be Tamed" from her new album, as well as "7 Things" and "Fly on the Wall" from 2008's Breakout, and "Start All Over" and "See You Again" from her 2007 debut, Meet Miley Cyrus.
"I can't wait for my fans to be able to download and play five of my songs in 'Rock Band,' " Cyrus said back when it was announced that she'd be joining the ranks of Green Day and the Beatles in the "Rock Band" world. "I love that people can rock out with me and play my new song, 'Can't Be Tamed'!"
Will you be playing Miley Cyrus "Rock Band"? What other songs do you think she should release for the game? Tell us in the comments!

Mark Ronson Working On D'Angelo album

Producer says D'Angelo has been working 'nonstop' on new music.By Mawuse Ziegbe

Mark Ronson

Photo: Frank Micelotta/ Getty Images

Mark Ronson might be the key to getting some of soul music's notoriously reclusive artists back in the studio. In addition to a June session with Amy Winehouse for her contribution to a Quincy Jones tribute album, Ronson said he's slated to work on new material with R&B artist D'Angelo.
The British producer told Billboard that he was "going into the studio ... to work a bit on his record, and I have equal parts intimidation and awe and excitement."
After releasing two acclaimed albums, 1995's Brown Sugar and Voodoo in 2000, D'Angelo has, for the most part, vanished from the scene, only occasionally dropping vocals on projects like Q-Tip's 2008 album The Renaissance and Raphael Saadiq's 2002 Instant Vintage LP. The singer may have shied away from the limelight in recent years, but Ronson said he's been staying busy. "I know he's been working nonstop. It's not like they've been sitting on their asses."
Ronson also revealed that D'Angelo has been keeping up on music during his hiatus. The singer and multi-instrumentalist, who covered Smokey Robinson on his debut and boasts a repertoire that often references throwback R&B sounds, said he's kept a pair of sonically retro albums in rotation.
"I was pretty much floored when D said that the only two records of the past five to six years that he really listened to a lot were St. Elsewhere by Gnarls Barkley and [Amy Winehouse's] Back to Black,' " said Ronson, who crafted Winehouse's 2007 hit album. "I was like, 'I cannot believe I made something that this guy listened to over and over again and looked to for inspiration.' "
Are you looking forward to a new D'Angelo album? Sound off in the comments below!

Skakira's official FIFA World Cup song 'Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)' has much company among 2010 soccer anthems.By Gil Kaufman

It's hard enough to get Americans pumped up to watch a bunch of other country's teams play soccer, but one thing we can all agree on is that the crazy-quilt Pangaea of World Cup anthems is an amazing spectacle to behold. From Shakira's Official FIFA World Cup song "Waka Waka (This Time for Africa)" to Russell Brand and Robbie Williams' remake of England's unofficial soccer song, "Three Lions," there are a head-spinning array of choices when it comes to soccer soundtracks for the planet's biggest sporting event.
Colombian hip-swiveler Shakira teamed up with South Africa's Freshlyground for the tournament's official song. The propulsive Afro-techno "Waka Waka" has the perfect mix of inspirational lyrics — "The pressure's on, you feel it/ It's time for Africa, your time to shine" — and a raise-the-roof vibe that you can picture pumping out of stereos from Johannesburg to Pittsburgh.
No slouch in the inspiration department, Mr. "I Believe I Can Fly" himself, R. Kelly, also cooked up an official FIFA World Cup anthem with a little ditty he calls "Sign of a Victory." The collabo with the Soweto Spiritual Singers choir — who will perform the song with Kelly at Friday's opening ceremonies — bubbles along on a syncopated, African percussion beat while Kelly sings, "I can feel the spirit of the nation/ And I can feel my wings riding the wind." The choir backs him up with an uplifting, wordless chant under the chorus "That's the sign of a victory." He also manages to incorporate the phrases, "let the games begin," "we can achieve anything, including the impossible," "raise the flag" and "scream like you want to win."
Somalian/Canadian rapper K'Naan also went the inspirational route with his official Coca-Cola anthem, "Wavin' Flag," which has the rising-up-from-oppression vibe of a classic Bob Marley tune. With assists from Will.I.Am and David Guetta, the soaring tune camouflages a song about poverty and oppression in a heart-stirring call to arms to let your banner fly.
Pepsi wasn't about to get aced out of this action, so it recruited Akon and Keri Hilson to make a video with soccer stars Lionel Messi of Argentina and Ivory Coast's Didier Drogba called "Oh Africa," as part of the celebration of the continent's first hosting duty for the global event. It also has the obligatory South African township jive stomp, and like the other songs, is as much about Africa's spot in the sun as it is about sports.
And because there's probably some rule about Bono having to participate in any globally unifying event, the U2 singer hooked up with Beninese singer Angelique Kidjo and John Legend for a thumping, Afro-pop cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Move On Up."
Another cover that was recorded as an unofficial English World Cup anthem is a banging remake of Tears for Fears' "Shout" called "Shout for England," laid down by U.K. rapper Dizzee Rascal and actor James Corden at the behest of former "American Idol" judge Simon Cowell. It has a thundering chorus that adds a thick acid-house beat to the original tune as Rascal spits lyrics to inspire England's soccer stars to victory.
For no apparent reason, New York's We Are Scientists have also offered up a song for England's club, the appropriately named, "Goal! England," a slice of T. Rex-inspired garage rock thunder that features the unforgettable lines, "Kicking the kicking the kicking the kicking the ball/ Kicking it into the goal/ Go, go, go, go go ... England!"
Then there is the official FIFA Mascot song from Cuban-American rapper Pitbull, who hooked up with South African group TKZee and England's Dario G to let the dogs out for the high NRG club banger "Game On." Taking things a little less seriously is U.K. legend Robbie Williams, who formed "The Squad" with comedians Russell Brand, Daniel Baddiel and Frank Skinner to record a remake of England's unofficial soccer song, "Three Lions." The mash of opera, a soaring choir singing, "It's coming home/ Football's coming home," a bouncy, Madness-like ska pop vibe and self-deprecating soccer-centric lyrics about England's chances of regaining football glory make for a lovably comic mess.
Among the other acts on the FIFA-sanctioned soundtrack to the international soccer showdown, Listen Up!: The Official 2010 FIFA World Cup Album, are: Nneka ("Viva Africa"), Matisyahu featuring Nameless ("One Day"), Wyclef Jean, J Pre, Jazmine Sullivan and B. Howard ("Ke Nako"), and late South African opera singer Siphiwo Ntshebe (known as the "black Pavarotti") featuring former South African president Nelson Mandela ("Hope").
And of course, if none of these tunes provide the right kick, there's always the unofficial World Cup Song contest, with nearly 400 entries. The top five is currently dominated by England, with Christian singer Gerry Asmus' "It's Our Game," a flowery pop piffle about King George and English pride, holding down the top spot at press time.

Nelly 'Feels Good' About 'Just A Dream' Making The Charts

'It's always great when your fans come out and support [you],' he says of landing at #8 on the iTunes singles chart.By Jayson Rodriguez, with reporting by Matt Elias

Nelly returned to the top 10 this week as his new single "Just a Dream" broke through on the iTunes singles chart to land at #8. After mixed reactions to his last project, Brass Knuckles, the St. Louis rapper said he felt excited to reconnect with his audience. The track is featured on his forthcoming album 5.0, which is set for release this fall.

"It's great," Nelly told MTV News about "Just a Dream" being embraced digitally. "It's always great when your fans come out and support [you] anytime in your career. But definitely after 10 years, and when you haven't been quite on the scene as much as your fans would like you to, but when they do get a glimpse of you and they feel good, it also makes you feel good."
"Just a Dream" was produced by Jim Jonsin (Lil Wayne's "Lollipop" and T.I.'s "Whatever You Like") and co-written by Rico Love (Usher, Beyoncé, Kelly Rowland).
According to Nelly, the string-heavy number almost didn't make it to him. He and Jonsin were working on music together for 5.0, and when the producer played beats for the rapper, "Just a Dream" appeared to be just an afterthought. Nelly scored the hit when he stopped Jonsin and asked him to replay the beat that would become his first single from the album.
"He was playing me a few of his beats and he played that beat, but he kind of moved on to the [next] beat pretty quick," Nelly explained. "I don't know if he thought I wouldn't like that one. [He laughs.] I was like, Wait a minute, what's that? 'Cause I love guitars, I'm a really big fan of guitars. When I heard it, I instantly was attracted to it. I got to listening and the more I listened to it, I got a vision and a feel for it."

'Love The Way You Lie' Director Knew Eminem Video Would Be 'Giant'

'If I didn't do this video, I should just quit pop videos,' Joseph Kahn tells MTV News.By James Montgomery

Joseph Kahn is one of the biggest video directors in the world, but he didn't get to where he is today by burying his head in the sand. So when he was approached about doing Eminem and Rihanna's "Love the Way You Lie" clip, he said yes, even though he was due to start shooting a feature film two weeks later.
But it wasn't only the big names that attracted him to the project ... it was actually the fact that everything about the project reminded him of another video he'd directed: Britney Spears' comeback single "Womanizer."

"It is like 'Womanizer,' " Kahn told MTV News. "Part of the success in [the video industry] is to be smart enough to recognize when those opportunities are given, and, you know what? I think if I didn't do this video, I should just quit pop videos, because it's obviously a giant thing that was about to happen. You couldn't get me away from this one."
So Kahn famously hammered out a treatment for the clip in one furious session and turned the video around at a breakneck pace. His hustle has already paid off, because "Love the Way You Lie" has quickly become one of the most talked-about videos in recent memory. And much like "Womanizer" did for Spears, its success has only added another chapter to Eminem's rather remarkable comeback story, which sort of proves just how smart Kahn is. Though, the way he tells it, this one was pretty much a no-brainer, all the way.
"I think that this is Eminem's finest album ... trust me, at the time, I was going to shoot my movie in about two weeks, so taking a week of my time away from my movie to do this is a huge commitment on my part," Kahn said. "The only reason I did it [was] because the song was so amazing, and the album is so great, and Eminem is in such a great moment, and it was such an important topic to do. He's dealing with these massive issues in such a brilliant, pop-y, artistic way, that, as a pop-video director, I cannot step away from this."

Semi Precious Weapons Tweet-N-Greet With Fans Before Lady Gaga Tour

One lucky fan, who traveled all the way from Australia, got two free tickets for their SPW devotion.By Matt Elias

LOS ANGELES — Semi Precious Weapons are known for their unabashed stage presence, flamboyant wardrobe and, maybe most of all, undying love for their fans. So when Lady Gaga's opening act hit Los Angeles for the Monster Ball Tour, the band invited MTV News along to witness firsthand a pre-show tweet-n-greet, with a very precious prize at the end.
SPW frontman Justin Tranter explained how it all goes down: "Every single day, we announce where we're going to have our Semi Precious Street Corner. So we show up somewhere every day to give away two tickets, free tickets, to the Monster Ball."

By the time the band tweeted their location from backstage and walked across the street from the Staples Center, 30 die-hard fans were already lined up. What followed was an energetic, impromptu trivia game to award tickets to the Weapons' biggest fan.
Once they arrived, Tranter took command of the crowd to narrow down three finalists.
"What is the fourth song on our album?" Tranter asked.
" 'Statues of Ourselves,' " finalist #1 answered.
Tranter continued: "Finish the sentence: 'Rock and roll never looked so ... ' "
"Beautiful!" screamed finalist #2.
"Last question: What is his name?" Tranter asked, while pointing at the band's bassist.
"Cole!" finalist #3 shouted.
With the lightning round over, Tranter had one more declaration before he picked the lucky fan. "Now, listen, you can't hate me if you don't win tickets, because I love you all, I love you all — but one of you is going to get two tickets," Tranter said. "OK, this last part gets really fancy. Are you ready?"
He then broke into the playground-worthy selection method "eeny, meeny, miny, moe," landing on a tearful super-fan who traveled all the way from Australia.
How would you have done on SPW's trivia test? Let us know in the comments!
