Cruising ahead of the pack as was widely expected, "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" easily shot to the top of the box office over the weekend of May 20-22, 2011.
The Johnny Depp/Penelope Cruz starring family friendly Disney caper pulled in $36 million on opening night en route to a $90.1 million weekend total.
Following quite a ways behind the latest "Pirates" release was the Kristen Wiig starring comedy "Bridesmaids," which earned a solid $21 million in its second week of release.
Rounding out the top five approximate placings at the box office this weekend are Chris Hemsworth's "Thor 3D" ($15.5 million), followed by "Fast Five" ($10.6 million) and "Rio" ($4.6 million).
