Matt Damon Defends Teachers, Rips Reporter

Matt Damon Defends Teachers, Rips Reporter

If you thought Matt Damon was intimidating in the Bourne franchise, wait until you get a load of this. In the entertaining video interview below, Damon -- who looks even more badass after shaving his head bald for his role in Elysium -- schools a Reason.TV reporter who asks an insensitive question about teachers during the recent 2011 Save Our Schools rally in Washington, D.C., punching holes through her argument with a few choice NSFW words.

The reporter tries to equate acting with teaching, telling Damon, 40, that surely his main incentive to work hard is "job security." Her implication seems to be that teachers (and perhaps anyone?) will slack off if they're given tenure or any other kind of employment guarantee. You can see Damon visibly annoyed as he shoots back, "You think job insecurity is what makes me work hard?"

The reporter tries to recover by making a point again about "incentive," but Damon -- at the rally with his mother, who's a teacher -- cuts her off. "You take this MBA-style thinking... It's the problem with ed policy right now: this intrinsically paternalistic view of problems that are much more complex than that," he says. "It's like saying a teacher is going to get lazy when they have tenure. A teacher wants to teach. I mean why else would you take a sh***y salary and really long hours and do that job unless you really love to do it?"

At this point, a cameraman ill-advisedly asks Damon, "Aren't 10 percent of teachers bad, though?"

Damon's mother exclaims, "Where did you get that number?" and the cameraman responds: "I don't know. Maybe 10 percent of people in any profession should think of something else."

Channeling his Good Will Hunting character -- who was fond of ripping his foes to shreds with his biting, quick-witted rhetoric -- the Harvard-educated Damon explodes, "Maybe you're a sh***y cameraman, I don't know!"

How do you like them apples?!
